The countdown to the 2016/2017 academic year has begun! For those of you who are looking forward to moving to Luton in September, Opto Living has put together a useful list of 5 things to do before starting university.

Find somewhere to live

The first and most important thing on our top 5 things to do before starting university. Finding somewhere to live is a big decision and it is important to consider what will make you happy.

Going to university is often the first time most people have lived away from home. That’s why it is important to consider what will make your feel comfortable.

Would you prefer to live in an en-suite room with a shared kitchen area or would you like your own self-contained studio apartment?

Consider whether you would like to stay in accommodation like Park House or the brand new Chapel Street which has a selection of free, onsite facilities including Wi-Fi, a gym, a cinema/meeting room, a communal games room, laundry facilities, 24/7 CCTV and a manned reception.

Get organised

There are some great deals out there for students so get organised and reap the rewards when you start your academic year!

It can be hard to sick to a budget at university however, there are plenty of ways for you to save money.

Did you know that you could save a third of your rail travel on selected lines by signing up for a 16-25 Rail Card? And the NUS Card will allow you to access over 200 discounts covering everything from shopping to cinema tickets.

You can also access a free RewardME card at the Mall Luton which will give you a selection of rewards and discounts at your local shopping centre.

Decide what to pack

It is hard enough to pack for a holiday let alone work out what you need to take when moving home.

Opto Living has made it easy for you to move straight into your home away from home. Each room will be set up upon your arrival which means that you can settle in as soon as you get your keys.

Your student starter pack includes bedding, a kettle, toaster, kitchen utensils, plates and even bath towels. Pots and pans are the only basic item which is not included.

This leaves you to have more space to pack those essential items you will need to get settled into your new environment.

Get to know the area

From signing up with a local doctor to working out where the closest supermarket is, finding your bearings in a new town or city can be overwhelming.

Going to an open day at your local university is a great way for you to find out more information about the local area, but don’t just stop there.

#teamopto is available onsite so why not ask them about the local area? From tasty take outs to student bars, from shopping hotspots to local travel information, ask at reception and find out all you need to know about Luton.

Get involved!

The last thing on our top 5 things to do before starting university begins when you get there!

Going to university can be an overwhelming experience and that is why you should consider getting involved from the start.

Join in activities at the Welcome Week/Freshers’ Week and sign up to events. This will help you to meet a wider range of people and discover new hobbies and interests.

But it’s not just about the first week of Uni. Check out the University of Bedfordshire’s Student Union and find out what societies you could join throughout the rest of the academic year.

Keep an eye out for posters from #teamopto about events held in the common rooms of your accommodation. Cinema club, pool tournaments and the welcome gathering are all things you can look forward to.

We hope this list of 5 things to do before starting university helps you settle into your student digs!
